Abstract

Nysius cymoides (Spinola) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae), commonly known as the false chinch bug or seed bug, is a polyphagous Palaearctic species increasingly reported as an agricultural pest across the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and, more recently, central Europe and South Asia. Although historically regarded as a minor and sporadic pest, N. cymoides now causes recurrent and at times severe outbreaks on a wide range of economically important crops, including oilseed rape, sunflower, soybean, quinoa, pistachio, jojoba, solanaceous vegetables, cactus, and carob, among others. Outbreaks are typically associated with hot, dry conditions and by the presence of crop residues or weedy field margins, which provide overwintering refugia and breeding sites. This review summarizes current knowledge on the biology and ecology, geographic distribution, host range, damage symptoms, natural enemies, and management strategies of N. cymoides. By consolidating this fragmented information, the review aims to provide concise, up-to-date reference for researchers, extension workers, and growers dealing with this emerging and increasingly damaging pest, and to identify knowledge gaps that warrant further investigation. The apparent geographic expansion of the species reported here should nevertheless be interpreted with some caution, since increased surveillance and reporting effort may have contributed to this pattern alongside any genuine change in range.
